4.12 - Acts 1:1-14 // Wait for The Holy Spirit

The mission of Jesus didn’t end at the resurrection. It moved forward.

In this opening message from the book of Acts, we see what happened next. Before the disciples were sent out, they were told to wait. Not for a plan. Not for clarity. But for power.

In Acts 1, Jesus promises the Holy Spirit and calls His followers to become His witnesses. From Jerusalem to the ends of the earth, the gospel was about to move. And it still is.

In this message:
• Why the resurrection is backed by convincing proof
• What it means to wait on God’s timing
• The promise and power of the Holy Spirit
• How Jesus calls ordinary people into His mission
• What it looks like to be His witness today

If you’ve ever felt stuck, uncertain, or ready to move before God says go, this message is a reminder that waiting is not wasted. God prepares you before He sends you.

He is risen indeed.

On Easter Sunday at Quarry Church, we opened John 20 and looked at the moment that changed everything. The tomb was empty. Death was defeated. And because Jesus rose, real life is available to everyone who believes in His name.

In this message, Pastor Bryan walks through the stories of Mary Magdalene, Peter, John, Thomas, and the disciples to show how the resurrection did more than surprise people. It changed them. And it still does.

In this sermon:
	•	Why the resurrection is the most important miracle in history
	•	How Jesus met Mary in her grief and called her by name
	•	What Peter and John saw at the empty tomb
	•	How Jesus brought peace to fearful disciples
	•	Why Thomas’ doubts were not the end of his story
	•	What it means to believe in Jesus and have life in His name

If you have ever wrestled with doubt, grief, fear, shame, or questions about whether life can really change, this message points to the risen King who still meets people right where they are.

On Palm Sunday, the crowd welcomed Jesus like a conquering king. But within days, everything would change. In “The King Who Came To Die…”, we see a Savior who didn’t come to take power, but to give His life. And that changes how we follow Him today.

In this sermon:
• The triumphal entry and why the crowd missed it
• How expectations of Jesus can blind us to His mission
• The powerful request: “Sir, we want to see Jesus”
• Why Jesus calls us to lose our life to find it
• The difference between easy prayers and courageous prayers
• What it means to pray: “Father, glorify Your name”

In “Fearless Love,” Pastor Bryan walks through 1 John 4:7-21 and shows how God doesn’t just have love. God is love. This message points us back to the cross, reminds us that love begins with God, and calls us to let His love shape the way we live, forgive, and love one another. If fear, bitterness, or distance has been taking up too much room in your heart, this sermon is a needed reminder that the love of God changes everything.

In this sermon:
• What it means when Scripture says “God is love”
• Why love starts with God’s initiative, not ours
• How perfect love drives out fear
• The difference between discipline and punishment
• Why you can’t truly love God while refusing to love others
• How God’s love is meant to overflow through His people

What does real Christian love look like when it hits the ground in everyday life?

In “Love That Shows” from 1 John 3:11–24, Pastor Bryan contrasts two paths—the way of Cain (selfishness, bitterness, hatred) and the way of Jesus (sacrifice, obedience, love in action). This passage doesn’t let us settle for love that’s only talked about. John calls the church to love that shows up—with hands, with compassion, and with tangible care for one another.

In this message:
• Why loving the church family is a clear sign we’ve passed from death to life
• How Jesus defines love: He laid down His life for us
• What it means to love “not in word or speech, but in action and in truth”
• How to fight doubt when your heart condemns you: God is greater than our hearts
• The simple command at the center: believe in Jesus and love one another

If you’ve been distracted, guarded, or running on empty, this is an invitation to let the Father fill you with His love—until it overflows to the people around you.

What does it really mean to be marked by God?

In this message from 1 John 2:28–3:10, Pastor Bryan walks us through one of the clearest identity passages in the New Testament. If you belong to Jesus, you’re not just forgiven—you’re called a child of God.

John challenges us to live in light of that identity.

In this sermon:
	•	What it means to abide in Christ with confidence
	•	The staggering truth: “See what great love the Father has given us—that we should be called God’s children”
	•	Why our identity shapes our behavior
	•	The difference between practicing sin and practicing righteousness
	•	How new birth produces a new direction

This message reminds us that salvation isn’t just a decision in the past—it’s a new life being formed in us right now. When you’re marked by God, it shows.

In this message from 1 John 2:15–27, Pastor Bryan calls us to an “untangled” heart: not captivated by what’s passing away, not deceived by false teaching, but anchored in Jesus and led by the Holy Spirit.

In this sermon:
• What John means by “do not love the world” (and what he doesn’t mean)
• The three traps: lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, pride of life
• Why the world’s promises don’t last: it’s passing away
• “The last hour” and how to stay ready without getting lost in speculation
• Recognizing the spirit of antichrist—anything that denies Jesus as Lord and Christ
• John’s simple, steady command: remain in what you heard from the beginning
• The encouragement: you have an anointing from the Holy Spirit who guides you into truth

What does real love for God actually look like in everyday life? In this message from 1 John 2:1–14, Pastor Bryan Alderman calls us to a faith that shows—a love that fights sin, clings to Jesus, obeys His word, and loves others the way Christ has loved us.

John speaks to believers living in a noisy, exhausting world with a message that’s both convicting and hopeful. We’re called to actively oppose sin, but when we fail (and we will), we’re reminded of this truth: we have an Advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ the righteous one.

In this sermon, we explore:
• Why Christians must actively oppose sin (without moral “self-fixes”)
• How to rest in Jesus as our Advocate and atoning sacrifice
• How obedience brings assurance that our faith is real
• Why loving others is not optional—it’s evidence of walking in the light
• What it means to love not just “as yourself,” but as Jesus has loved you
• How every believer can live in Christ’s victory—children, fathers, and young adults alike

John’s message is clear: you can’t claim to walk in the light while hating your brother or sister. The love of Jesus is not just something we believe—it’s something we live out by the power of the Holy Spirit.

What does it really mean to follow Jesus—not just on Sundays, but Monday through Saturday? In this message, Pastor Bryan Alderman kicks off our new series through 1 John with a call to life in the light: a real, honest, joy-filled walk with Jesus marked by fellowship, confession, and cleansing.

In 1 John 1, we’re reminded that Jesus isn’t just meant to be believed—He’s meant to be experienced. John says he heard Jesus, saw Him, and even touched Him… and he wrote so that our joy may be complete. Then comes the challenge: if God is light and there is no darkness in Him, we can’t claim fellowship with God while continuing to walk in darkness.

This message is both an invitation and a warning:
• Jesus is real (this isn’t myth—this is witnessed truth)
• Jesus is life (eternal life and abundant life right now)
• God is light (holy, pure, trustworthy—no darkness in Him)
• Walking in the light means honesty, fellowship, and confession
• The promise: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9)

As you listen, ask:
✅ Do I have fellowship with the Father through Jesus?
✅ Am I walking in the light—or hiding in darkness?
✅ What’s one step of confession and obedience God is calling me to today?

The gospel doesn’t just inform us — it demands a response.

In the final message of “Forward with the Gospel,” Pastor Bryan walks through Romans 10:9–15 and challenges us to consider what we do with the good news we’ve heard. God has spoken. Christ has come. Salvation is available. Now the question is: how will we respond?

Message highlights:
• The gospel only changes lives when it’s responded to.
• Confessing “Jesus is Lord” is public, personal, and costly.
• True faith goes beyond head knowledge to heart belief.
• Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
• The gospel moves forward when God’s people go and tell it.

This message reminds us that Christianity is not passive. If the war is over, the victory is won, and peace has been declared — then living as if nothing has changed is not an option.

The gospel has come to us so that it might go through us.

The gospel isn’t about what we do for God — it’s about what Jesus has done for us.

In Week 3 of “Forward with the Gospel,” Pastor Bryan walks through Romans 5:6–11 to show us the center of the gospel message: Christ. When we were helpless, ungodly, and far from God, Jesus stepped in to do what we could never do for ourselves.

Message highlights:
• Christ came for us at our worst, not our best.
• Jesus’ death proves God’s love and pays the price for our sin.
• We are justified by His blood and saved from God’s wrath.
• Through Christ, enemies of God are reconciled and brought near.
• The resurrected life of Jesus secures our future and fuels our hope.

This message reminds us that salvation is not earned, behavior isn’t the foundation, and effort isn’t the answer. Jesus is. And because we’ve been reconciled to God through Christ, our lives are now meant to reflect His glory and carry the gospel forward to others.

Scripture says it runs through every human heart.

In Week 2 of “Forward with the Gospel,” Pastor Bryan walks through Romans 3:9–23 to show us the hard but necessary truth about humanity — and why grace is our only hope.

Message highlights:
• There is no spiritual advantage before God. Every person stands guilty.
• Sin traps us deeper than effort or morality can fix.
• God’s law exposes our need, but it cannot save us.
• Salvation comes only by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
• The gospel isn’t good advice for better people — it’s good news for desperate ones.

This message confronts our pride, levels the ground, and reminds us why the gospel is not optional. If everyone has sinned and fallen short, then everyone needs to hear about Jesus.

In this opening message of “Forward with the Gospel,” Pastor Bryan walks through Romans 1:16–20 and calls us back to the foundation of our faith. Before we can share the gospel boldly, we have to understand who God is and why the gospel matters.

Message highlights:
• The gospel is God’s plan for salvation, not ours.
• God is the righteous Judge who takes sin seriously — because He loves His creation.
• God has made Himself known through creation, Scripture, and ultimately Jesus.
• Faith has always been the way people are made right with God.
• If you know the gospel well enough to believe it, you know it well enough to share it.

As we begin a new year, this message challenges us to stop being silent and move forward with the gospel—knowing it, living it, and sharing it with confidence.

As we head toward a new year, most of us feel the pull to make resolutions and “try harder.” But Romans 7 tells the truth we all know: wanting to change isn’t enough. Even when we desire what’s right, we still find ourselves pulled toward what we hate.

In this standalone message, “A Better Way To New Year,” Worship Pastor Trey Wood walks us through Romans 7:14–8:2 to show the real battle beneath our habits—and the real hope for lasting change.

✅ The law can reveal sin, but it can’t fix it.
✅ The Christian life is an ongoing war—but war doesn’t mean you’re condemned.
✅ The gospel isn’t behavior modification—it’s living from a new identity in Christ.
✅ Freedom comes through Jesus: “There is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1)

If you’re tired of repeating the same cycle… tired of guilt… tired of trying to change in your own strength… this message is an invitation to breathe again and run to Jesus with honesty, dependence, and hope.

In this Christmas Eve devotional, Pastor Bryan reminds us of a simple (and steadying) truth:

You never know what work God is doing — but what God is doing is always working for you to know Him.

From Joseph’s disrupted plans, to Mary’s unexpected calling, to Jesus born in humble circumstances, God was at work the whole time—keeping every promise and drawing His people to Himself.

And because God kept His promises in the first Advent, we can trust Him with the promises He’s still keeping today.

📖 Key Scripture: Romans 8:28
✨ Big Takeaway: It’s never a question of if God will keep His promises—only how.
🙏 Challenge: When God speaks to you this Christmas season… will you listen?

We pray this devotional encourages you with fresh perspective, steady hope, and confidence in our promise-making, promise-keeping God.

Merry Christmas from all of us at Quarry Church!

In the final week of our Advent series “Our King Has Come,” Pastor Bryan walks through John 13:1–20, where Jesus washes the feet of His disciples on the night before the cross. It’s a powerful picture of what real love looks like: humble, costly, and willing to step into the mess for the sake of others.

Message highlights:
• Love is more than a feeling — it’s an affectionate, deliberate decision to commit.
• Jesus knew the cross was coming, yet chose to serve instead of protecting Himself.
• True love is costly and often messy, but always worth it.
• We need the love of Jesus before we can live the love of Jesus.
• Foot-washing love is the mark of Christ’s people — and the mission we’re sent on.

This Advent, we’re reminded that the baby in the manger came because God loves us — completely, sacrificially, and forever.

This week in our Advent series “The King Has Come,” Pastor Bryan walked through one of Jesus’ most familiar and powerful stories — the parable of the prodigal son. In it, we see that joy isn’t circumstantial, earned, or reserved for the perfect. Joy flows from grace, repentance, and a Father who runs to meet His children.

Message highlights:
• Running from the Father always means running from joy.
• Even desperation can be the first step toward coming home.
• Grace doesn’t lecture — grace throws a party.
• Heaven rejoices every time a lost son or daughter returns.
• Pride and bitterness quietly steal joy, even from those who stay close.
• Real joy is found in celebrating what God has done, not comparing what we think we deserve.

This week in our Advent series “The King Has Come,” Pastor Bryan walked through Matthew 14:22–33 and reminded us that peace isn’t found in calm circumstances — it’s found in the presence of the King who walks on the waves. When the wind is against you, when you feel like you’re sinking, the most powerful prayer you can pray is still, “Lord, save me.”

Message highlights:
• Peace is not the absence of storms — Jesus sometimes sends us into them.
• While the disciples were straining at the oars, Jesus was praying and watching. You are never unseen.
• Peace comes from recognizing His voice: “Take courage. It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
• Real peace fuels “crazy” faith — like Peter stepping out of the boat at Jesus’ word.
• When our faith falters, Jesus still reaches out immediately to save.
• Worship is how we fight for peace in our souls and fix our eyes back on Jesus.

This week, Matt Chandler opened our Advent series The King Has Come with the intertwined stories of Jairus’s dying daughter and the woman who had suffered for twelve years. In both moments, Jesus steps into fear, shame, and desperation — and brings hope that moves fast, reaches deep, and restores fully.

Message highlights:
• Jairus falls at Jesus’ feet: a respected leader driven by humility and desperation.
• A bleeding woman reaches for healing: isolated, exhausted, and still choosing faith.
• Jesus stops, listens, and restores: He draws out the whole truth so nothing stays hidden.
• “Don’t fear. Only believe.” Even when the news feels final, Jesus isn’t finished.
• Hope that lifts the dead: with a word and a touch, Jesus raises a little girl back to life.

Message highlights:
• Invite Jesus into your plans: wisdom starts with humility, not control.
• Watch out for greed: wealth can deceive us into thinking we don’t need God.
• Be patient and endure: like a farmer waits for rain, we hold fast knowing the Lord is near.

We don’t just follow Jesus when life is easy — we follow Him when our desires collide and relationships get messy.

This week, Pastor Bryan walked through James 4:1–12 and showed us that most strife in our lives comes from one place: the “kingdom of me.” When our desires go unmet, friendships fracture, marriages strain, and even our walk with God feels distant. But James reminds us that the way forward isn’t winning — it’s surrender. Real faith lays down pride, resists the enemy, and returns to friendship with God.

Message highlights:
• The source of conflict: fights, tension, and drama often flow from unmet desires and the “kingdom of me.”
• Friendship with the world vs. friendship with God: you can’t chase the world’s ways and walk closely with Jesus at the same time.
• The solution is surrender: submit to God, resist the devil, draw near to Him, and let Him deal with your heart.
• Humility heals strife: take your sin seriously, stop tearing others down, and trust God to lift you up in His time.

This week, Pastor Bryan unpacked James 3:13–18, showing that real faith produces wisdom that’s pure, peace-loving, gentle, and full of mercy. The way we think reveals the kind of wisdom guiding our hearts — worldly or godly.

Message highlights:
• Two kinds of wisdom: earthly wisdom manifested by envy and selfish ambition vs. heavenly wisdom manifested in humility.
• Wisdom shows in conduct: real understanding isn’t loud or proud; it’s visible through good works and gentleness.
• Peace is proof of wisdom: peacemakers sow peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.
• Faith that thinks: godly wisdom starts with surrender — letting the Spirit shape your thoughts before your words or actions.

Words shape lives — and reveal hearts.

This week, Trey Wood (our illustrious worship pastor) taught from James 3:1–12, showing why our tongues are small but powerful: they can steer, scorch, or speak life. We don’t just manage our words; we surrender our hearts to the Holy Spirit and let Him transform what we say.

Message highlights:
• Teachers, tread carefully. Those who explain God’s Word are held to a stricter evaluation—our words carry eternal weight.
• Tiny tongue, huge impact. Like a bit, rudder, and spark, our speech directs lives and can destroy when unchecked.
• No one can tame it… but God can. The tongue exposes the heart; only the Spirit changes the source.
• Blessing vs. cursing. Praising God while tearing down His image-bearers is spiritual nonsense—fresh and bitter water can’t flow from the same spring.
• Pursue transformation, not just filters. Word + prayer + accountability → a heart renewed and a tongue that heals, encourages, and speaks the gospel.

Real faith isn’t just confessed — it’s demonstrated.

This week, Pastor Bryan walked through James 2:14–26, showing why “faith without works is dead.” Saving faith is living, active, and visible in how we love, serve, and obey.

Message highlights:
• Dead faith doesn’t save. If there are no works, it’s counterfeit.
• Real faith meets real needs. Don’t say “be warm and well-fed” — do something about it.
• Belief isn’t enough. Even demons believe; living faith bears fruit.
• Examples that prove it. Abraham and Rahab: faith completed by action.
• The pattern: Faith → Salvation → Works. Works don’t earn grace; they evidence it.

This week, Pastor Bryan continued our Grit & Grace series in James 2:1–13, calling us to a faith that refuses favoritism, loves neighbors, and chooses mercy over judgment.

Message highlights:
• No favoritism. The ground is level at the foot of the cross—welcome everyone like Jesus welcomed you.
• Keep the royal law. “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Partiality breaks it.
• Live under the law of freedom. Real freedom is Spirit-empowered obedience, not “do whatever I want.”
• Mercy triumphs. Move faster to mercy than to judgment—in church, at work, and even in traffic.

This week, Pastor Bryan continued our Grit & Grace series in James 1:19–27, reminding us that genuine faith shows up in what we do, not just what we know. A faith that listens, obeys, and acts is the faith that changes lives.

Message highlights:
• Listen first. Be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger — that’s how we reflect God’s heart.
• Kill sin daily. Get rid of all moral filth and humbly receive God’s Word that saves.
• Do the Word. Don’t just listen to Scripture — live it. Obedience leads to blessing.
• Pursue pure religion. Real faith cares for the vulnerable and stays unstained by the world.

When life gets hard, what does faith look like that doesn’t quit?

Yesterday, Pastor Bryan opened our new series Grit & Grace with James 1:1-18; a no-nonsense letter about real faith that endures. God isn’t out to break us through trials; He’s building endurance, wisdom, and joy that can’t be shaken.

Message highlights:
• Trials are training grounds. God uses hard seasons to grow endurance that leads to maturity.
• Ask for wisdom. When you don’t know what to do, ask in faith—God gives generously.
• Wealth won’t save you. Rich or poor, your hope must rest in the Lord, not your stuff.
• Temptation starts in us. Evil desires grow into sin and death—but grace gives us power to stop it early.
• God is still good. Every good and perfect gift comes from the Father of lights, who never changes.

In this message, Pastor Bryan teaches from Romans 5:1–11 in our Church Isn’t for Me series, speaking to those wounded inside the church and pointing us to the hope we have in Jesus.

Message highlights:
• Church hurt is common: We’re a hospital for sinners, not a country club for saints.
• Why it happens: All have sinned (Rom. 3:23). Broken people sometimes break people.
• Christ is our champion: In Jesus we have peace with God, access to grace, and the Spirit poured into our hearts.
• A path through pain: Affliction → endurance → proven character → hope that won’t disappoint (Rom. 5:3–5).
• Your next step: Don’t run from Jesus. Run to Him—start with one honest prayer, one passage, one act of grace.

Yesterday Pastor Bryan taught from John 14:15–21 in our Church Isn’t for Me series. Jesus links love to obedience and promises real help for real life.

Message highlights:
• Jesus demands devotion: “If you love me, keep my commands.”
• Devotion leads to life: The Helper, the Holy Spirit, gives power the world can’t give.
• You are not alone: “I will not leave you as orphans.” Because He lives, we live.
• Union with Christ: In Christ and Christ in us means His perfection covers us and His presence empowers us.
• Devotion demands discipline: Start one simple habit toward obedience today. Try a 21-day streak in Scripture and prayer.

When tragedy and scandal shake us, what does Jesus say about His Church?

At the beginning of this message, Pastor Bryan began with seven biblical reminders in response to this week’s events and the assassination of Charlie Kirk (and other episodes of political violence). We covered seven important reminders for Christians in the wake.

Seven reminders:
1. Ready your soul. Hug your people.
2. Violence is never the answer.
3. Our core problem is lostness, not party lines.
4. Any movement that forgets the fear of the Lord drifts toward folly.
5. Words matter. The tongue can burn or bless.
6. God gives government a sword to pursue justice.
7. Speak freely, but speak Christianly.

After this, we moved back into our sermon series and addressed why church scandals are no reason to give up on what Jesus is doing through His church.

Matthew 16:13–18 — four anchors:
• A rock solid confession: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
• A sovereign Savior: “I will build my Church.”
• Bigger than any scandal: Jesus carries His people through failure.
• Certain victory: “The gates of Hades will not prevail.”

Life’s full. Calendars are slammed. But is “I’m too busy” really a time problem—or a priorities problem? In week one of our new series, Pastor Bryan opens Hebrews 10:23–25 to show why regular, committed participation in a local church isn’t a pastor’s scheme—it’s God’s idea for your good.

Big idea: Jesus’ faithfulness fuels our faithfulness. You need your church, your church needs you, and if you’re “too busy for church,” you may be too busy for Jesus.

Next steps

	• Ask God who you can encourage and invite this week.

What if God wants to do more in your life than you’ve ever imagined?

This weekend at Quarry Church, Pastor Bryan walked us through Ephesians 3:14–21 as we closed our On Purpose with Purpose series. Together, we unpacked what it looks like to:
• Pray for more: asking God to strengthen us with His power.
• Dream for more: believing He can do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine.
• Live for more: letting every part of our lives bring glory to His name.

God doesn’t call us to settle for ordinary faith. In Ephesians 3, Paul prays that we would be strengthened with power, rooted in love, and filled with the fullness of God. This passage reminds us to pray boldly, dream faithfully, and live with the confidence that He can do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine.
